I discovered Jason Calicanis through TWiT (This Week in Technology). Some people dislike him but I find him funny, entertaining, and an inspiration to listen to. Being interested in business, and the workings of it, I’ve enjoyed his insights. When I heard about his show TWiSt (This Week in Startups) I was interested, and when I got started to listening to it through iTunes, I’ve enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the guest on #13. Matt Mickiewicz and lucky and clever guy. I like stories about people who skip college. I, myself am going to college because I need skills I can get from there, but sometimes it’s not necessary. I’m going to try to make a little pocket money (or more…) through 99 Designs, thanks for the tip. Shark Tank was great. It was interesting to see the good and bad pitch and hear the critique of the presentation. Inspiring for me and I hope what I learned can become rewarding.

While the content is amazing, I have a few problems with the execution.

I have a pair of quality headphones. They point out flaws in the source material. There is a low hum throughout the podcast. I don’t know if it’s the A/C or an open ground. It’s the only podcast I get with this low hum. I’ve heard worse, but it would be nice to get this hum eliminated.

The fanfare for segments is handled amateurishly. When they play Taps for the “Dead Pool” play a few bars, fade a little, begin talking, and fade out behind the speaking. This would save some time, and make the show flow smoother. They shouldn’t announce the segment, play the song, and do the segment, but play the song, say what the segment is and do it.

The show, while interesting, seems too long. At time it becomes chore to listen to it and I don’t want to miss a thing. They say that you should only study for 50 minutes at a time. Perhaps break the segments into individual episodes. So this episode could be Episode 13.1, 13.2 13.3 with approximately 40 minute segments. They could be Q&A with Jason and Guest(s), Interview & News, Shark Tank (or other special event) & Homework. This could allow for creative advertising sales too (placement options).

The set is dull. Black background? I was downloading the video, but it was uninteresting. They could set up a green screen and be at the beach, a café, veranda, or a Tonight Show type skyline. DL.TV did great with a HDTV and corrugated metal. HD Nation has a good set out of a HDTV and sound insulation. Tekzilla looks cool. The background adds character. Perhaps it should look like the inside of a garage. Hang some tools, a bike and a fake wall, and park the Tesla (or a station wagon) to the side.

I’m not going to stop my subscription it’s opening my eyes and I would like to see a great show get even better.
